Greens call out Turnbull/Shorten hypocrisy over political donation deluge

The Greens have stepped up their call for political donation reform as the Prime Minister and leader of the opposition go into overdrive with their multi-million corporate fund raising events that will bring in millions of dollars.

"Right now Mr Turnbull and Mr Shorten are hustling for big corporate donations, a process of chasing private money that has a corrupting influence on our democracy," Greens democracy spokesperson Senator Rhiannon said.

"The bulk of these donations will pay for the expensive television campaign advertisements that will increase with today's start of pre-polling.

"The failure of the Liberals, Nationals and Labor to pass political donation reform means they buy themselves a political advantage and further entrench the two party system.

"The Coalition-Labor advertisement frenzy about to hit the voting public highlights the inequity of the current system.

"The two major parties outspend minor parties by about 19 to 1, while their vote share is about 4 to 1 according to the Conversation's Fact Check.

"In the next parliament the Greens will again introduce bills to lift disclosure standards so all donations over $1000 are revealed and to bring in bans on corporate donations and limits on election expenditure," Senator Rhiannon said.
